About Us

People keep asking us why they can't recycle all their plastics; like yogurt cups and clamshell style containers. Many recycling facilities do not accept them because, although they may look alike, they are often made from many different plastics. At recycling centers, it's impossible for workers to grab these materials off the fast moving conveyor belts and check the small recycling symbols on the bottom. The solution is automated sorting systems and although they cost millions of dollars, there are already more than 100 operating in the US. To support this investment in high technology recycling equipment, increased recycling rates and reduced exports are imperative. The U.S. currently exports over 50% of the PET collected and non bottle PET is expected to grow to half the size of the 5 billion pound bottle market by 2011.

We have been making packaging with high percentages of recycled plastic for several years but now we are committed to use 100% recycled plastic wherever possible. Our goal is to help double the recycling rate for # 1 plastic, breaking through the 30% "plastic" ceiling of the last few decades. Since a lot of this packaging is used while on the go we need more bins in public spaces, arenas and stadiums.

The solutions to these issues should be driven by industry through extended producer responsibility with consumer education in the forefront, not by government regulation. That's why we are committed to supporting organizations like Keep America Beautiful, a leader in litter prevention, waste reduction, recycling and community improvement at both local and national levels.

"We feel that improved consumer awareness about the benefits of recycling and the issues with recycling non-bottle containers will help raise recycling rates."
Michael Brown, President, Packaging 2.0

"Developing end markets for products that "complete the loop" by using recycled materials is essential to the success of recycling in America and we're encouraged by industry innovations that design sustainability into the products that touch our daily lives."
Matt McKenna, President & CEO, Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
